Art Basel is Coming

Alessandro Abate November 12, 2017

Basel is in the air in Wynwood. You can smell it in the air, literally. The smell of aerosol paint invades your nostrils as you approach the walls where street artists are applying their craft. Soon the streets of Wynwood will be crawling with activity as dozens of street artists converge on the city to renew the murals on our walls.

Mural of Jazzelle Zanaughtti by Gamma Acosta and Luis Valle
Art Basel 2017

Art Basel 2017 came and went and it left its mark on Wynwood. The past two years, 2015 &N 2016, were somewhat disappointing but 2017 was the best Art Basel for Wynwood in three years. We had many amazing murals painted all over Wynwood not least of which is this one in one of the more quiet corners still remaining in the neighborhood, This mural was a collaboration by Gamma Acosta from Denver and Luis Valle from Miami.

This is my first time doing a print on acrylic and I'm very impressed with the result. Usually prints in general are much more impressive than just seeing them on the screen or a smart phone. But the combination of the large size, 4 feet wide, and the format resulted in a piece that I'm very proud of.

The culture in and around Wynwood isn't limited to graffiti and street art, there is a vibrant spoken word poetry scene and a lot of it is very good. I have photographed a few dozen of these performers and few if any have moved me as much as Mori Taiye did. As soon as I saw her in the crowd at Sisternity I was captivated by her presence but I was not prepared for the power of her words.

I abandoned my site a couple of years ago. I hadn't posted any updates here because between Facebook and Instagram I didn't have enough to worry about this site. I had been meaning to migrate to Squarespace 7 for sometime but I hadn't set time aside to do it.

Resiliency Project
Resiliency Project

I am looking for people to participate in a long term project inspired by human resiliency, I am seeking people who have endured great stress in their lives to the print of breaking mentally, physically or emotionally and have been tempered by the experience. I was inspired to come up with the project by the Japanese art form of kintsugi.
